“Yo Ho Ho.” –Anne Garland (I have an extreme pirate obsession :)

Name: Anne Garland
Age: 22
Occupation: Public Relations Associate
Where do you work? David and Sam PR
Where are you from? Originally from Tucson, Arizona
Did you go to college?
Yes, and I'm technically still in attendance. I have one independent course to complete.
What did you study? Journalism: Public Relations & Strategic Media
Why did you pick this career?
I've always been intrigued by the process of conveying someone's message in a way that benefits many people.
What are your future plans for your career?
Fortunately, I began with David and Sam PR young, and while the company is young. I intend to stay here for some time and watch the company grow as we all grow in our talents and expertise.
How did you get involved in this career?
For as long as I can remember, I've been interested in Public Relations. I studied Journalism in school with an emphasis on strategic media. I searched the area to find opportunities that met my goals, and found the perfect fit.
How did you prepare yourself for this career?
I prepared myself through higher education and also through promotion of bands in the local area. Promoting bands helped me hone skills that I apply daily in my work.
And if you just happened to land this career, what made you stay?
The company- simple as that. This company is ideal for a young individual. The learning curve is steep but the support is equal.
What are the downsides to this profession?
The only downside I've seen thus far is older veterans of the media world taking me less seriously. I'm sure this is true in any industry, but it has proven to be an obstacle I continually have to deal with.
What is a typical workday for you?
The best part about this job is that I don't have a typical work day. I have expectations, but no day is the same.
I can expect to deal first hand with clients daily. I can expect to be thrown "curve balls." I can expect to learn.
How might this job be a stepping stone to other professions?
Quite honestly, I hope that this job is my foundation for years to come. This job helps me become grounded in the community, and develop relationships among working professionals and influential people in the area.
What is the single-most important piece of advice you can offer a person pursuing this career?
I think the most important advice is to go into the profession confident and outgoing. It's about meeting people and forming relationships- there isn't any room to be shy. Also, I think that you have to be humble and learn from people before you.
What steps do you recommend to someone who is planning to pursue this career?
If someone were planning to pursue a career in public relations, I would suggest meeting people in the area- people who work in PR, media, big business, etc. The more people you know, the easier your job becomes. Apply for internships. And be sure to do research. You want an employer who is reputable and esteemed in the community.
What professional or community volunteer organizations are you currently a member of? I'm extremely involved in Young Life, a Christian outreach ministry. I lead Arizona State University Young Life, where I try to love people exactly as they are, because I'm loved as I am.
