Stepping Up The Game - 9-12-07
“Passion for life stems from a commitment to our desires.” -Gabrielle Bernstein
Name: Gabrielle Bernstein
Age: 27
Occupation: Lifestyle/Career Coach (youth market) and Publicity
Where are you from? Larchmont, NY
Did you go to college? Syracuse University
What did you study? Theatre
Where do you work? Entrepreneur
Why did you pick this career?
I chose to be a publicist because at 21 I knew my mission was to work with people and publicize things I believed in while being my own boss. I chose to begin lifestyle/career coaching three years ago after starting a speaking circuit at local universities. I experienced a feeling and high that I had never known before when I was in front of a large audience sharing my experiences.
What are your future plans for your career?
I am about to launch a book this winter called Falling in Love with Your Future – A young woman's guidebook towards her passion for life - I recently launched a social networking site for young women to find mentors - www.herfuture.com. I plan to continue my speaking circuit and share my message through radio, books, Internet and all applicable outlets.
How did you get involved in this career?
I threw myself right in. I started my first two companies at 22. The first company was a non-profit called The Women's Entrepreneurial Network (WEN) and the second was a boutique PR firm called SparkPlug PR. I worked hard right out of college to figure out what would make me happy in my life. I kept my overall lifestyle in mind when creating my career. Again, it was important for me to work with people, be my own boss and publicize things I believe in. Therefore the choice to go into PR was effortless. I believe that when you follow your true passions, all of the details fall into place.
How did you prepare yourself for this career?
In all cases of my life I have taken big leaps and threw myself into whatever it was I chose to do. I taught myself to be a publicist, event planner and small business owner. Through informational meetings with experts in the business, reading, networking and lots of little right actions I was able to enter my career. The same process has gone on with creating the brand Falling in Love with your Future. Today I am much more relaxed and rely on my faith in my future in a stronger way than I did when I was 22. I believe that I am following my fated path and therefore all I need to do is show up daily.
And if you just happened to land in this career what made you stay?
I have stayed because I love what I do. I consider myself to be someone who loves to juggle multiple profit centers and always keep them connected.
What are the downsides to this profession?
There are not many. I guess being an entrepreneur requires a certain commitment but again, if you do what you love it is hard to find to much to complain about.
What is a typical workday for you?
I'm up at 8 am and I meditate for a 1/2 hour before I get dressed. Mediation is a very important part of my day! I am in the office by 9:30 and begin fielding emails and calls. Again, at this point I am managing multiple profit centers therefore no day is like the last. I have meetings throughout the day and into the evening. I try and network as much as possible and when I am not out or with friends I am doing some kind of physical activity. The gym, rollerblading, unicycle etc.
How might this job be a stepping stone to other professions?
I believe that a lot of amazing extensions will come from all of the work I am currently doing. I plan to create large networking events for young women to find mentors. I look forward to working with multiple brands and bringing it all back to the concept of following your true passions. Ultimately I plan to have a TV or radio show that will support all of the work I do.
What is the single-most important piece of advice you can offer a person pursuing this career?
Take the time to uncover what you love before you jump into any career.
What steps do you recommend to someone who is planning to pursue this career?
For any job pursuit I strongly suggest learning as much about the industry in advance. Read about the leaders in the industry and find a mentor in that field. Don't be afraid to set up informational meetings with people to learn more. Be humble and teachable.
What professional or community volunteer organizations are you currently a member of?
I am the President of the Young Professionals Council for Choice for NARAL Pro-Choice New York.
