“Remember, no man is a failure who has friends.” – Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life”

Name: Kevin Shane
Age: 26
Occupation: Entrepreneur
Did you go to college? Where? Babson College ‘03
What did you study? Entrepreneurship and Finance
Where do you work? Telmé Clothing ( www.TelmeClothing.com ) in Ewing, NJ
Where are you from? Hillsborough, NJ
Why did you pick this career?
I love the idea of creating something from nothing and doing well with it.
What are your future plans for your career?
I’m in the process of starting another business. Entrepreneurs start, build and sell, start build, sell, and so on.
How did you get involved in this career? I started Telmé Clothing after college.
How did you prepare yourself for this career?
Babson did a great job in preparing me for starting my own business. Other than that, I’ve been learning more every single day.
And if you just happened to land in this career what made you stay?
T-shirts pretty much fell into my lap. I created a few tees for my college graduation party (to give out as a souvenir to family and friends) and the tee was a huge hit. I decided to go with it and create a brand around it…Telmé Clothing was born!
What are the downsides to this profession?
The downsides are that you do not receive a consistent pay. If business is good, income is up…if business is slow, income is down.
What is a typical workday for you?
Wake up, surf, eat breakfast, play Jenga, get dressed, eat a big lunch, take a nap, go to the gym, drink a protein shake, watch some sports on TV and then maybe go out for the night…I wish! I wake up in the morning, stroll to my office (my 2 nd bedroom) if I’m working at home, do about an hour of work (check emails mostly), then eat breakfast and watch a little CNBC, then back to my office to do whatever tasks I have for the day, try to get to the gym between 5 and 7, come home, turn on my grill, eat up and relax (or go back to my office if I feel like doing some more work).
How might this job be a stepping stone to other professions?
Starting my own business has taught me all facets of business. It’s given me a great foundation for any profession in the future.
What is the single-most important piece of advice you can offer a person pursuing this career? Follow your passion…then find out how you can profit from of it.
What steps do you recommend to someone who is planning to pursue this career?
For anyone looking to start their own company, I suggest creating a team of people to begin with. Multiple people work exponentially faster, more efficient, and smarter together.
What professional or community volunteer organizations are you currently a member of? Every year, I raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and participate in the MS Walk. Also, I do the Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweeps twice a year. I’m a member of some Environmental organizations too.
