“Keep Going”

It’s been my mantra for years. I still have up a sheet of paper that says this in my childhood bedroom that I haven’t officially lived in since I was 18.

Name: Amber J. Adams

Age: 26

Occupation: Journalist/Writer

Where are you from? Tennessee originally. I live in NYC now.

Did you go to college? Where? Yep! The University of  Tennessee at Chattanooga

What did you study? Communications

Where do you work? At a national women’s magazine in New York.

Why did you pick this career?
I love to talk to people, I love to write, and I love to help people tell their story.

What are your future plans for your career?
I would like to write books that focus on inspiring Gen Y to take charge of their life. I would like to start several businesses (everything from a lingerie line to a media company).

How did you get involved in this career?
Once I found out that there was pizza at the meetings for our city-wide high school newspaper, I knew I needed to be involved! I started doing journalism then, at 16, and I’ve never stopped!

How did you prepare yourself for this career?
The only way you can prepare yourself to be a journalist is to just do it. You get out there, find a story, and you tell it.

And if you just happened to land in this career what made you stay?
I love knowing that every day is different, and getting experience that will lead me toward other dreams.

What are the downsides to this profession? The money, honestly.

What is a typical workday for you?
Read the news. Morning meetings. Write, if I am producing a story on deadline. Act as a liaison between the finance office, and freelance writers. Help my senior editor in whatever way she needs it for that particular day.

How might this job be a stepping stone to other professions?
I get to meet a lot of people in various professions, so I’ll know some people if I decide to make some moves!

What is the single-most important piece of advice you can offer a person pursuing this career? Don’t give up. If you keep receiving “No’s” rethink your strategy. Don’t be afraid to be innovative.

What steps do you recommend to someone who is planning to pursue this career?
Intern, Intern, Intern. Don’t accept unpaid work after college unless you KNOW it will land you a job.

What’s a funny memory from your college or high school days you are legally allowed to share?
My friend and I once drove to Atlanta at midnight to go to Six Flags for their Halloween Party. We rode the rides all night until the sun came up at 6 a.m. It was so much fun!
